283 grams (10 ounces/1⅔ cups) bittersweet chocolate chips246 grams (1 cup) tahini1 teaspoon table salt224 grams (7 cups) Rice Chex cereal283 grams (2½ cups) confectioners' sugar71 grams (½ cup) sesame seeds
Before You Begin
Tahini elevates this snack mix with a sophisticated, adult-friendly flavor, but peanut butter or almond butter also work. If you do swap out the tahini, feel free to also omit the sesame seeds. We used one 10-ounce bag of Ghirardelli 60% Premium Baking Chips here, but you can use your favorite brand.
Instructions
- Line rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. Microwave 283 grams (1⅔ cups) bittersweet chocolate chips, 246 grams (1 cup) tahini, and 1 teaspoon table salt in large bowl at 50 percent power, stirring frequently with silicone spatula, until melted, 1 to 3 minutes. Fold in 224 grams (7 cups) Rice Chex cereal until evenly coated.
- Sprinkle 283 grams (2½ cups) confectioners’ sugar and 71 grams (½ cup) sesame seeds evenly over cereal mixture then stir to fully coat. Transfer to prepared sheet. Let stand until chocolate is set, about 1 hour. (Puppy chow can be stored in airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days).

Why This Recipe Works
Classic puppy chow is hard to beat with its peanut butter–chocolate coating. But swapping in tahini creates a sophisticated, adult-friendly version. Tahini’s natural bitterness and deep, nutty flavor pair well with bittersweet chocolate. Adding sesame seeds to the coating along with powdered sugar reinforces the tahini’s nuttiness in every bite.
